LivingSoiLL brings soil science to Nanjing at the World Congress of Soil Science
Two partners of the LivingSoiLL consortium presented their research findings at the 23rd World Congress of Soil Science (23WCSS), held from 7 to 12 June 2026 in Nanjing, China. The event brought together researchers, practitioners and policymakers from around the world under the theme “Soil and the Shared Future for Humanity”.
The Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS) and the University of Turin (UNITO) represented the LivingSoiLL project with two oral presentations focused on soil health in European agricultural systems, strengthening the link between the work carried out in the project’s Living Labs and the international scientific community.
WULS presents findings from the Grójec Living Lab
Professor Jerzy Jonczak, from WULS, delivered the presentation “Identification of soil health-related problems in apple orchards: preliminary results from the Grójec Living Lab”. The presentation shared early results from the work carried out in the Grójec Living Lab, where the research focuses on the apple orchards that define the local agricultural landscape.
Jonczak’s work identifies the main soil health-related problems detected in these orchards, contributing directly to LivingSoiLL’s goal of diagnosing and monitoring soil health indicators in real agricultural settings.
UNITO explores the vineyard terroirs of North-Western Italy
Dr. Sara Negri, from UNITO, delivered the presentation “Soil health in the vineyards of North-Western Italy: A story of terroirs”. The presentation examined the relationship between soil health and the different terroirs that define wine production in North-Western Italy, a region that corresponds to LivingSoiLL’s Piemonte Living Lab.
Negri’s research highlights how soil characteristics vary across different vineyard terroirs. This work reinforces the territorial dimension of LivingSoiLL’s approach, which recognizes the diversity of soils and agricultural practices across its five European Living Labs.
International visibility for the project
The presence of WULS and UNITO at 23WCSS demonstrates LivingSoiLL’s commitment to sharing its results with the international scientific community. By presenting results collected in Polish orchards and Italian vineyards, the two partners helped position the project as a reference in applied research on soil health in European agricultural systems.
The World Congress of Soil Science, held since 1927, remains one of the leading scientific forums dedicated to soils worldwide. LivingSoiLL’s participation in this edition reflects the value of the work carried out across its Living Labs and strengthens the project’s connections with the global scientific community working toward healthier soils.
